1. Distinguish at least 3 ways that Sensory Processing Difficulties impact a child’s feeding behavior
2. Create a plan for therapeutic activities to help a child achieve and maintain the “Just Right” arousal space for learning based on their unique sensory-motor profile
3. Formulate at least 3 ways to modify the therapeutic environment or the food presentation to facilitate learning about the food and building of feeding skills

1. Intro/Overview of Sensory Theory & Definitions (24 minutes)
2. Assessing Sensory Processing Skills for Feeding (53 minutes)

4. Maintaining the Just Right Arousal State (56 minutes)
5. Managing Problem Behaviors and Review (35 minutes)

This course has a run time of 4 hours.

Course Level

The SOS Approach to Feeding conference is an advanced level course: Information is geared to practitioners with a general working knowledge of current practice trends and literature related to the subject matter. Focus is on increasing understanding and competent application of the subject matter.

This course is offered for .4 ASHA CEUs (Advanced Level, Professional Content area). This course will focus on the treatment SOS Approach to Feeding and will not discuss other similar or related treatments. Not available for partial credit.

Helping Children Achieve and Maintain the Just Right Arousal Space for Learning – Bethany CF Kortsha

Bethany CF Kortsha, MA, OTR/L received her Master of Arts degree in Occupational Therapy from The College of Saint Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota. She completed her Master’s thesis on Autism and feeding challenges using the SOS Approach to Feeding. Bethany currently works as a Pediatric Feeding Specialist at S.O.S. Feeding Solutions at STAR Center (Sensory Therapies and Research Center with Dr. Lucy Jane Miller). She also is the Director of Clinical Mentorship for Toomey & Associates, Inc. Prior to joining STAR Center and Toomey & Associates, Inc., Bethany worked as a member on a multidisciplinary team in a day treatment clinic for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, SPD, emotional/behavioral disorders, and feeding problems. Additionally, Bethany has completed the SPD Foundations Intensive Mentorship Program and is a certified DIR Floortime Provider.
