SOS Approach to Feeding: Assessment and Treatment of Pediatric Feeding Challenges
The Sequential Oral Sensory (S.O.S) Approach to Feeding is a transdisciplinary program for assessing and treating children with feeding difficulties and weight/growth problems from birth to 18 years. It integrates posture, sensory, motor, behavioral/learning, medical, and nutritional factors to comprehensively evaluate and manage children with feeding/growth problems.
- Attendees receive foundational information regarding feeding development, evaluation, and SOS Treatment.
- Training is delivered in a Hybrid format = 9 hours online, pre-recorded content + 5 days live-streamed online via Zoom (must be attended live, on camera).
- Teaching methodology includes: direction instruction and lecture, physical exercises, assessment and treatment videos, group activities and case presentations.
- Attendees receive a Certificate of Completion that is eligible for submission to Professional Organizations for Continuing Education Hours earned during the course.
Included with the completion of the SOS Training Course, participants receive:

- Monthly Live Q&A Events via Zoom with Dr. Kay Toomey.
- Free quarterly SOS Feeding Steps Newsletter with resources for implementing the SOS Approach to Feeding.
Training Course Expectations & Instructions for Certificate of Completion
Attendance Requirements
- English fluency is required to participate in this course.
- This Hybrid Training Course has a 100% attendance requirement.
- Participants are required to complete the 9-hour prerequisite pre-recorded Online Segment at least ONE week BEFORE the first day of the Live Stream Segment in order to be permitted to attend the Live Stream Segment of the course. Participants are required to pass a short multiple-choice test at the end of 5 out of the 6 Chapters with a minimum score of 80% to verify completion of the prerequisite Online Segment.
- During the Live Stream Segment of the Training Course, participants are expected to attend the Training Course and participate fully for the entire length of each day (3:00 PM-10:00 PM Arabia Standard Time days 1-5) in order to receive their Certificate of Completion and/or to be allowed to use the SOS Approach to Feeding program. Participants will miss crucial information needed to be able to correctly use the SOS Approach to Feeding program if they come late or leave early.
- Participants are required to attend a live, 1-hour Orientation Meeting via Zoom 1 week prior to the start of the In-Person Segment of the Training Course.
Technical and Log-on Requirements
- A computer is the preferred device for participating in this Online Training Course. A tablet might be allowable if the other requirements below can be met with that tablet. Taking the Training Course on a phone is not permitted.
- You MUST be able to hard-wire your computer directly into the Internet connection via an Ethernet cord. Wi-Fi connections to the internet are not sufficient and will not provide enough clarity to view videos and Speaker demonstrations. In addition, Wi-Fi connections cause many technical problems resulting in too much time lost from the Training Course.
- A working Webcam on your computer is required (most laptops have the camera embedded).
- Headphones/Earbuds to listen to the Training Course from your device are suggested to provide you with the clearest signal and the least amount of background noise and static interference.
Live Stream Course Guidelines and Expectations
- Training Course participants are required to sign into Zoom each day.
- Training Course participants will be expected to complete a test, with at least 80% accuracy, at the end of each day of each day of the Live Stream Segment of the Training Course to verify their understanding of the Training Course materials.
- Upon full completion of the SOS Approach to Feeding Training Course, participants must also complete a course evaluation form in order to receive their Certificate of Completion.
- Participants will be required to have their computer camera on throughout the online Training Course to help verify attendance and participation in the Teaching Exercises.
- Participants will be expected to engage in Teaching Exercises on camera as demonstrated and taught during the Training Course.
- Training Course participants will be expected to submit comments via the Zoom Chat Box in response to questions asked of them by the Speaker at least twice and up to four times daily.
